“Once Upon A Christmas Night…”

If you’ve been looking for a Christmas album this season, this may or may not be the one, but I am really moved by how it came together.  My mother was after me for years to record a piano album so she could enjoy the thousands of dollars in piano lessons she and my dad bought for me while I was growing up.   As I began compiling the tunes I wanted to include, the composition of the album began designing itself.  The songs I decided on sound a bit like the prep for a wedding – some old, some new, some borrowed and one from a French film.  Okay, almost like wedding prep.   The album features some of my favorite Northwest veteran singers in the form of John B. Cooper, Elise Campello and my old singing crony  Roy Wilson as well as the amazing Holly Chase in her recording debut.  It also features two tremendous instrumentalists that I know you’ll love – Aaron Fishburn on Contrabass and Electric Basses as well as Soo-Yean Oh on Violin.

The last solo guest I asked to be involved was an artist that I had the great pleasure of meeting when I was judging a singer/songwriter competition in Leavenworth, WA.  As soon as I heard her sing, I was a fan.  Oh, and she won the competition!  Beth Whitney is amazing and worth a listen if you have never heard her recordings.  I asked her husband Aaron (my bass player on the album) if Beth would consider co-writing a piece for the album, and 24 hours later she sent me an MP3 of “Mittens and Peppermint.”  It’s a great tune, and if you can forgive the weak link in my vocals, it is the essence of how I think Beth writes.

The other involvement came from all the fantastic singing talents from students at both of my studios, my boys Zach and Jonny and my beautiful wife Rachel.    Mr. Tony Bamboe captured our musical moments as engineer and set the title track to a music video that is really cool!

This is my attempt at a “simple” Christmas piano album – I hope you like it, Mom.  Have a Merry and Blessed Christmas and May this album help ignite your flame!   ~ Andrew T. Miller, Composer
